EU notifies WTO of potential counter-measures on certain US products

The World Trade Organization (WTO) has announced that the European Union (EU) has notified the WTO’s Council for Trade in Goods of its proposed suspension of concessions and other obligations that are substantially equivalent to the amount of trade affected by the measures imposed by the United States (US). Accordingly, the EU has stated that it reserves its right to take counter-measures against the US tariffs on steel and aluminum imports.

According to the WTO, the EU stated that it might apply retaliation measures on certain products from June 20 onwards, adding that the measures would continue to apply until the safeguard measures of the US are lifted.

The EU’s list of US products, on which it might impose measures, includes bourbon, corn, rice, cranberries and steel products. Meanwhile, Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has said that Japan has also notified the WTO that it reserves its right to take counter-measures against US steel and aluminum tariffs, according to a Reuters report.
